I was driving out by Goethe State Forest in Levy County, Florida the other day and I saw this little guy sitting in the middle of the oncoming lane. A truck had just passed a couple of seconds before, so I’m guessing he was hit.
I kind of slid him out of the lane onto the side of the road but then the red ants started to take an interest in him. The only thing I could do was pick him up and ‘hook’ him on a fence post. I kept looking at his beak thinking how much it would hurt if he got scared and decided to sink it into my hand.
I held my breath, said a little prayer and picked him up. He seemed quite calm as I carried him to the fencepost.
He hung there and I could slowly see him start to clear his head. After a couple more minutes he flew to a near by telephone pole. As I was getting in my truck to drive off, he flew into the woods.
I had a video camera along so I decided to share the adventure. Enjoy!
